Dr. Thomas Klak
Open to UNE students

Dr. Thomas Klak is offering a unique travel course in the 糖心传媒 environmental science department in the fall of 2011.  Students are invited to this informational meeting to learn about the course and the trip to Dominica.

The UNE course, Caribbean Sustainable Development, will focus on the challenges of, and progress toward, sustainable development in Dominica, the self-proclaimed "Nature Island".  As part of the fall course, students will travel with Dr. Klak to Dominica, January 5-16, 2012 to explore the tropical island ecosystems, engage with Dominican partners who are working to achieve sustainable development, and make their own contributions through hands-on participatory development projects.

The briefer time spent in the neighboring country of Antigua shows the consequences of focusing on conventional mass tourism. Comparisons between the two countries provide insights into alternative approaches to tourism, ecosystem management, and development.

Dr. Klak has previously taught this course at Miami University and invites interested UNE students to view the website.
