UNE Physical Therapy students provide medical care at Beach to Beacon 2016

UNE volunteers at Beach to beacon 2016

A group of dedicated UNE students from the Doctor of Physical Therapy program donated their time on Saturday, August 6, 2016 to provide medical care to athletes running in the annual Beach to Beacon 10k road race.

The students, along with Kirsten Buchanan, Ph.D., P.T., A.T.C., assistant clinical professor, assisted with all aspects of care on the medical team in the pre-finish area, at the finish line and in the medical tent. They directly helped more than 45 people who came into the medical tent. Because of the high temperatures, many of the patients came in with heat stroke. One patient had a temperature of 108.8, a record for the race. With the help of the student volunteers that patient walked out of the medical tent and was able to celebrate with family that night.
